It is important that AS SOON as your computer is successfully connected to the school network that you complete the Personal Computer Registration Agreement. This is compulsory for all pupils and members of staff that wish to use their own computer in school (including in the boarding houses).

Configuring your web browser to access the internet in school
To do this you must already be connected to the school
network
Using Internet Explorer (5 or above recommended)
Go to Tools > Internet Options > Connections > LAN Settings. Then tick the top box "automatically detect settings" and untick all the other boxes:
Click "OK" until you get back to the main I.E. window, then try to navigate to a website.
This should allow Internet Explorer to automatically get the proxy settings from the school server.
If you try this, and it does not work then go to Tools > Internet Options > Connections > LAN Settings. Untick the "automatically detect settings" and "use automatic configuration" boxes. Tick the "Use a proxy server for your LAN" and "Bypass proxy server for local addresses" boxes, and enter "bproxy" as the address and "8080" as the port.
Click "OK" until you get back to the main I.E. window, you should now be able to navigate to a website.
If you are a member of staff then enter "sproxy" rather than "bproxy"
Using Firefox
Go to Edit > Options > Connection Settings. All you should have to do is select "Auto-Detect proxy settings for this network" and click "OK" until you return to the main browser window:
If this doesn't work, it may be necessary to select "manual proxy configuration" in the Connection Settings window. Then tick the "use the same proxy for all protocols" box and enter "bproxy" as the HTTP Proxy and "8080" as the port. Under "No Proxy for:" enter "localhost". Click "OK" until you return to the main browser window.
If you are a member of staff then enter "sproxy" rather than "bproxy"
Using Safari
Go to Apple Menu > Location > Network:
Then click Location > New Location: (whilst it isn't essential to create a new location it means that you will be able to easily switch between school and home settings once the computer is setup - by going to Apple Menu > Location and selecting the required location)
Enter the name of the new location:
Go to the "Proxies" tab. Tick the "Web Proxy (HTTP)" and "Secure Web Proxy (HTTPS)" boxes.
With "Web Proxy (HTTP)" selected enter "bproxy" and "8080" along the right. Tick the box "proxy server requires password" (see below for more details). Repeat this step with "Secure Web Proxy (HTTPS)" highlighted.
Under the password dialog box you need to enter your school email address as the account (username@bedfordschool.org.uk), with your school password as the password.
Click "OK" then "Apply Now".
These proxy settings are system-wide, therefore, any application on the Mac that uses the internet should now automatically go through the proxy. If you create another location called "Home" you can then easily switch between the two sets of settings by going to Apple Menu > Location and selecting the right one.
If you are a member of staff then enter "sproxy" rather than "bproxy"

Antivirus Advice
It is important that you have antivirus software installed on your computer, especially if you use your computer in school.
Any one of the major antivirus packages should provide adequate protection (e.g. Norton, McAfee, ZoneAlarm). Members of staff can benefit from the school's Panda Anti-Virus license (contact itsupport to borrow a CD).
Antivirus is useless if it isn't kept up to date. Therefore, it is important that you set your antivirus to automatically update (at least once a week, but preferably more frequently).
It is also important that you allow the antivirus to run regular scans of your system, to make sure you aren't infected.
If you suspect that you have transfered a virus onto the school network, then please contact itsupport.
You also need to make sure that Windows is kept up to date on your machine, as Microsoft provides frequent security patches (on the second Tuesday of every month). You can do this by going to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ in Internet Explorer.
You can enable automatic updates: right click My Computer on the Desktop > Properties > Automatic Updates then select "Automatic". Select the frequency you would likethe computer to check for updates. Then click "OK".
